One chicken, a bowl of rice, and a cucumber

Bs”d

Recently, a single friend of mine asked for an invitation to a Shabbat meal from a family with whom, some months ago, he had enjoyed a nice meal.

They invited him – but he was beside himself to see how they were living now. This large family had one chicken, a bowl of rice, and a cucumber that was rationed to all gathered around the Shabbos table. As I write this I am moved to tears.

This year Rosh HaShana is a “3 day Yom Tov” here in Israel. Some joke about how lots of Israelis have a hard time with this infrequently experienced situation. But there’s no joking when we imagine the additional pressure on a family like the one my friend visited. How will they manage 3 days of special meals?

Keren HaTzadik/ Rabbi Aryeh Levin Fund knows of at least 50 large families like the one described above who need significant assistance. Another 100 smaller families are in a similar situation. 100’s more are in a slightly better position but are truly in need of assistance and certainly worthy of our ongoing support – particularly for the Yamim Tovim.

I truly believe that HaShem is giving us an opportunity to be His agents for Chesed/kindness, for the Hesder Soldier/Scholars who physically and spiritually defend Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael. We don’t need a longer list of reasons to spur us on to offer generous support.

As we approach the first “Yahrzeit” of the invasion, economic exhaustion is afflicting families more intensely even as their mesirut nefesh/self-sacrifice is unending. Your support is urgently needed to assist and strengthen our heroes.

Thank you and Shana Tova!
